DEADLY INTERNATIONAL OPEN

Windrush Kickboxing Club had a great number turning up to the Deadly International Open on Sunday 27th September. 1st up was mixed teams, including Heidi Davies, Amanda Menzies, Jordan Petersons, Dan Aspell and Steve Blake - taking a brillint first place, expecially seeing as Heidi is 12 years old and it was Jordans first competiton fighting as an adult.

There was a whole array of fighting levels from novice to advanced, child to adult.

Both Kyle Alcroft and Lewis Glennie took 1st places in their Novice to Advanced Childrens Semi-Contact Categories. Both showing skill beyond their years! Luke Freshwater took a fantastic first place in his Advanced Continuous, pipped at the post on his Semi-Contact to take a good second place. Stevie Wilkins and Ryan Embling were first in both their Advanced Categories - Light Continuous and Semi-Contact, well done boys! Ross McDuff also fought points, winning his section.

Windrush also gained 2nd places through Steve Blake (Mens Advanced Points), Tom Gould (Boys Advanced Points) and Heidi Davies (Girls Advanced Points & Continuous). Third places were taken by Tom Gould (Boys Advanced Continuous), Jordan Petersons (Mens Advanced Points & Continuous), Amanda Menzies (Women Openweight), Jon Izod (Mens Advanced Continuous).

Up and coming novices to watch are Mike Goodman, gaining 2nd place in his Mens Novice Semi-Contact Category, Dan Aspell 2nd in his Mens Novice Semi-Contact, but scooping up a fantastic first place in the Mens Novice Light Continuous and little Archie Gould who took 3rd place in his Childrens Novice to Advanced Semi-Contact Section.

WELL DONE WINDRUSH! A GREAT TEAM EFFORT. THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT SHOWED!

Thanks to Mrs Freshwater and Mrs Cross for handing out fliers, and to Paul Wilkins for the photographs (please see our facebook page)

Berkshire Open

Windrush Kickboxing Club attended a competition in Berkshire, July 2009. Each of the 15 fighters were matched up with someone of the same weight and ability. From men, women and children, novice to advanced. Some had never fought before and were complete beginners. Club members from all over the South of England came to fight in a boxing ring, with a large audience, so tensions were high. All fights were to be “light continuous” as oppose to points fighting. It was all day event, with up to 100 fights overall.

Out of 16 fights on the day, Windrush Kickboxing Club came out with 14 wins!! What a fantastic result! It showed on the day what a great club we were. Each fighter was supported by the rest of the club when they fought. Thanks to everyone that came and supported us (Chris Roche!).

Left back row: Scott Kilburn (trainer), Symon Willoughby (34), Dan McKeown (22), Jordan Petersons (15), Mike Kelly (23), Chris Hoyles (club owner, trainer), Kelly Drewett (29), Dan Aspell (19), Luke Freshwater (15), Lisa Haine (26), David Lorenzo (22)

Front row: Stevie Wilkins (14), Ryan Embling (10), Tom Gould (12), Lucy Cook (13), Lee Singleton (13)

There are loads of photographs of the day on our facebook page

Club Grading July

Well done to everyone who took a grading this month. Results will be announced in the next few weeks. It does take a while to process all the grades.

WUMA Invite-Only Interclub Tournament

Nine children from Windrush Kickboxing Club attended the WUMA "1 on 1" competition in Cheltenham on Sunday 19th April, where they were matched up with 1 child from another club, of their own size and standard. We had a really successful day with seven out of nine winning their boughts. For 4 of the children it was their first competition ever.

Jordan Petersons (15) then went on to compete against adults in both semi-contact and continuous and won BOTH SECTIONS!

We were really proud of everyone, and it was a great intimate competition.

West Oxfordshire District Council Sports & Arts Achievement Awards
Imogen Shayler & Jordan Peterson: HIGH ACHIEVERS
Chris Hoyles: COACH OF THE YEAR

We attended the West Oxfordshire District Council Sports & Arts Achievement Awards on March 6th 2009 to see Imogen Shayler and Jordan Petersons collect awards for SPORTS HIGH ACHIEVERS. With so much competition at the awards, many picking up Sports Achievers, we were extremely proud of both students who were two of only 3 young people to be awarded High Achiever. It was nice to see two young, dedicated students get some recognition for what they have done. We wish both of them well for the future, and hope their dedication will continue.

With a full table of Windrush supporters, the night got even better when Chris Hoyles picked up COACH OF THE YEAR, after being nominated by his students - describing him as an 'inspiration'. His dedication to the sport and to the students has been second to none over the 13 years that Windrush Kickboxing Club has been going. It was a great honour after also receiving WUMA Coach of the Decade at the end of last year. He was completely at a loss for words!

To read the write up in the Witney Gazette, click here

At just 16 Imogen Shayler takes two 1st places in her first Ladies Event!

Imogen Shayler attended the WUMA British Open 1st March, and took 1st place in both the Advanced Womens Continuous and Semi-Contact sections; having only just turned 16 this is an amazing achievement for Imogen. Well done Imo, long may your success continue!

Scott Kilburn and Steve Miles : Full Contact Fight Night, Lincoln

Well done to Scott Kilburn and Steve Miles who both fought full contact on Saturday 21st February 2009. Unfortuately Scotts opponant pulled out due to a hurt rib. Scott, being well fired up, was able to fight Callum Thomson from Black Dragons in a "show fight". It was a high-class fight and all in good spirit. Steve Miles, however, took on his opponant in his first ever fight, but unfortunately lost on this occassion, after getting back up from two knock downs. He had the heart of a lion! Well done boys!

Chris Hoyles with Richard Hopkins, receiving Instructor of the Decade Award!Chris Hoyles : 5th Dan, Instructor of the Decade and Life Time Achievement!

Chris Hoyles was presented at the WUMA AWARDS for Life Time Achievement AND Instructor of the Decade, along with his 5th Dan, making him a master.

Richard Hopkins (founder of WUMA) presented Chris with his Awards saying "If there is one man you want in your corner, it's Chris Hoyles".

Everyone in WUMA and at WKBC thinks the Instructor of the Decade award is really well deserved; Chris puts loads of time in to training his students, and attending competitions. With 29 years of Martial Arts behind him, he has a unique way of teaching. He adds a light-hearted edge to both 5th Dan Blackbelt Mastertraining and competing, but keeps the passion. He has an amazing ability in semi, light- continuous and full contact, and always offers expert advice when your on the mat.

I think every one of his students would agree: Chris is the best!

Kelly Drewett was also presented with an award from WUMA for Outstanding Achievement, in the last two World Championships, in which she gained a total of 9 golds.

BRAVO!

WUMA Six-Foot Series Fight-Offs 2008

The Six-Foot Series Fight-offs are for all those that have taken a 1st in any of the WUMA Six-Foot Series Competitions in 2008. The winners of each category come head to head in a bought for a Six-Foot Trophy, rendering them over-all winner of the Six-Foot Series.

Stevie Wilkins, Lewis Glennie, Scott Summers, Imogen Shayler, Steve, Chris Hoyles and Kelly Drewett all had the chance to fight for the six-foot trophy, and were accompanied to the Fight-offs by Luke Freshwater, Lewis Freshwater and Kyle Alcroft who all fought in the 'normal' competition, with high hopes to become winners and compete in the fight-offs.

Five of the seven who went in the fight-offs came out on top in several sections, claiming more than 5 six-foot trophies for WINDRUSH KICKBOXING CLUB!

First up was Lewis Glennie, who was pipped at the post in claiming his six-foot trophy in boys semi-contact, with a brilliant final fight, beaten by just 2 clear points, that saw the trophy slip away from him. A great result in Lewis' first year of competition fighting. Stevie Wilkins had a similar disappointing result after a brilliant fight in semi-contact that saw him only just loose the final. He has done very well this year, it is a shame not to come away winner of the fight-offs.

Scott Summers was able to enter the Intermediate continuous fight-off after a win at the beginning of the year having just having come back to competitions after a knee injury. He did fantastically well putting up a good fight in the final and claiming his six-foot trophy to become over all winner! Welcome back Scott!

Imogen Shayler took a six-foot trophy in girls Continuous after an interesting final where spectators saw Imogen take on someone twice her own size. Imogen kept her style and went on to win! She was second over all in the semi-contact, where she just lost out in the final.

Steve, who has won the Novice Men's +75kg Semi-Contact all year, claimed his six-foot trophy after another brilliant display, which means he hasn't lost a fight all year. Long may it continue Steve!

Chris Hoyles won the +85kg Men's Continuous, streets ahead of all those 20 years younger than him! After a very long tiring battle in the Masters semi-contact, which went to 30 seconds and then first to two clear points, Chris unjustly lost out, but came out buzzing!

Kelly Drewett took on Women's semi-contact +72kg, Women's semi-contact Open Weight and Women's +72kg Continuous and managed to get a six-foot trophy in each.

Well done to Luke Freshwater, who just lost out on qualifying for the -165cm semi-contact six-foot fight-offs after another great fight, which saw Luke fight hard and strong, but come out with a rather bruised, bent thumb, which meant he couldn't go on to compete in the Continuous. And also to Lewis Freshwater and Kyle Alcroft, both great up and coming little fighters.

WELL DONE WINDRUSH!

Children's' Christmas Disco

This was a great success, could we thank all the parents that helped out and those that did food and supplied drinks. It would not of happened without you. The kids loved it, and were all really good, so looks like we will be doing it again next year!

Stevie Wilkins was the first to bag a title in his Continuous on the Friday, then took silver and a bronze in points on the Sunday. Scott Kilburn followed with a GOLD in his full contact. The same day proved successful to Paul Dolton, who also gained his title in continuous. Imogen Shayler (girls), Kelly Drewett (ladies) and Chris Hoyles (men's) each gained Semi-Contact and Continuous titles. Imogen and Kelly were joined by Anne Brindley to make up the WUMA Women's GB Team, and gained another gold. Jordan Petersons was pipped at the post and gained a FANTASTIC second place. Symon Willoughby also took a third and a second place. Our boys Paul Dolton, Stevie Wilkins and Jordan Petersons took SECOND in the boys teams section. Come on!

THIS IS A BRILLIANT RESULT FOR SUCH A SMALL CLUB! We are pleased that everyone made the effort to go, aside from the amount of trophies we came back with.

There was some fantastic fighting, and it was nice to see so many countries there. Each fought a range of people from Wales, Scotland, Malta, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, America and Uganda.

Scott Kilburn comes out on top ...

Scott Kilburn, third dan black belt, has trained with Chris Hoyles for 16 years, in both boxing and kickboxing. After spending most of 2008 in training, he entered the ring for only the 7th ever full contact fight of his career, at the WUMA Full Contact Internationals.

With support of 29 club members, friends and family Scotts nerves never got the better of him. With Chris Hoyles and Greg White holding his corner, Scott looked fit and ready for the fight when he started the first of three '2 minute' rounds.

Testing the water and using his fast feet to dodge many of the opponents punches, Scott looked set to win even in the early stages of the fight.

The second round didn't last long, after a straight right hand was set by Scott, splitting the eye of the opponent, rendering him unable to fight on.

It was Scott's fight to take! Now on to the WORLDS!

Well done Scott, after all the hard work you've put in to training. Scott will be fighting full contact in the WUMA World Championships. We look forward to seeing him win his section!

Also, well done to Thomas and Callum from the Black Dragons, Ice Man and Kelly Mainwaring.

Jordan Petersons' Gets Gold!!!

Seven children from Windrush Kickboxing club joined Chris Hoyles, Kelly Drewett, Scott Kilburn and Symon Willoughby in Worcester for the WUMA National Championship. All children fought hard, with not one backing down.

Star of the show, Jordan Petersons, due to fight in the WUMA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in November, won two golds in semi-contact and continuous. He fought hard with control and speed. Stevie Wilkins also had some great fights, showing the club that he wants to win as much as anyone else, and is on the right track to win his sections at WUMA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Thomas Cross got a second place in his continuous section. Lewis Glennie and Tom Gould both got a second and a third place each!

Chris Hoyles, the old man, met some very talented fighters in all of his sections - 85kg Mens Semi Contact, -85kg Mens Continuous and the Masters, and he won ALL THREE!!!! Still got it in him! Symon Willoughby fought really well and gained a second place trophy in the Mens Continuous too, plus third in the semi.

Kelly Drewett did well in the Womens +75kg Semi Contact and Womens +75kg Continuous to come out on top in both.

There were two children who's first competition it was, Kyle Alcroft and Lewis Freshwater. Both boys put up good fights and we were proud of them for putting in so much effort.

Samuel Cross (1 third place) and Luke Freshwater (2 third places) both fought really well on the day, and are all gaining experience and confidence.

We have high hopes for all of these little fighters in the future.

We were really pleased with everyone's effort to make it, plus the parent support we got. Let's hope we can all go together again in the near future.

BIKMA OPEN BRITISH SEMI CONTACT KICKBOXING BRITISH TITLE FIGHTS

Sunday October 28th

Fighters: Chris Hoyles, Robert Howse, Greg White, Darryl Jeffrey, Roland Bowles, Steven Wilkins

Write up: We set off with high spirits, with a couple of new fighters, in the expectation that we would be fighting light continuous in the ring. When we arrived we were initially not disappointed - the competition was well organised, with fair rules, good paramedics, we were told exactly when we were going to fight and given chance to warm up. But once in the ring the ref was in a different place than us. Most of us lost fairly, but all of us were totally battered and came out the other end of an uncontrolled, almost full-contact fight, that didn't seem to be under the control at all by the referee - with far too many KO's for "light continuous". We are gonna go back, as we enjoyed the competition, but with a different attitude! Thank you to Frank Bowen. Check out the photographs in the photo gallery

WUMA British Open Kumite - August 19th

Well done to everyone who went to the British Open this month - we had some winners: Robert Howse got two first places in Advanced Mens Points and Roland Bowles got first place in the Novices Mens Points. Jon Izod tried his hand at Strike and Grapple and came out second place! Go to the competitions page for more results ...

Pete completed the London Marathon on 22nd April 2007 for the NSPCC to raise as much money as he can for a worthwhile charity.

"I started training with Chris about two years ago after kicking a twenty a day smoking habit and have recently obtained my blue belt. Kickboxing is what made me start enjoying getting fit and is part of the reason for doing the run; so within two years of quiting smoking and starting kickboxing I will be running 26 miles and 385 yards hopefully in under four hours."

WELL DONE PETE!

Chris AngelsMARCH 2006 - CHRIS' ANGELS!!!
ALL FIVE GIRLS PASSED THEIR BLACK-BELT GRADING ...

Sharon Read took her 3rd Dan, whilst Amanda Menzies, Louise Palmer, Kelly Ebanja and Kelly Drewett all passed their 1st Dan Black Belt gradings.

This was also the last Grading taken at WUMA's Head Quarters in Cheltenham, which was a bit sad in itself. The girls went through 3 and a half hours of gruelling training, and did a continuous 36 minutes (timed by Chris) consisting of jumping front kicks, followed by 10 punches, a jumping back kick and then tuck jumps. There are a few war wounds and the injuries have worsened, but after a bit of rest I'm sure they'll get by ... Thank you to WUMA and all those on the panel! TAKE A LOOK AT SOME PICTURES ... click here!
